Press & Highlights
Accra Art Week (AAW) aims to play a pivotal role in increasing the awareness of the Ghanaian art culture. Launched in 2018, AAW seeks to establish itself as the major event for art lovers and collectors in Ghana and beyond. To achieve this goal, we aim to put on year on year, an all inclusive ART WEEK. By so doing, it is our hope that the following aims will be achieved;
a) Building awareness and appreciation of the creative (art + design) industry by showcasing and
promoting local artists, cultural art institutions and art spaces.
b) To develop Accra into a distinctive arts and culture hub within the sub region and the continent.
c) Provide a platform to showcase fine art and antiques from leading local and international galleries.
d) To help build capacity in the industry by providing networking opportunities for investors,
collectors, patrons and other supporters of the industry.
e) To recognize, and award the creatives whose success in the past year has inspired many.
In association with our partners, the first edition of AAW will include a myriad of activities from exhibitions, roundtable discussions, paintball and live painting competitions among other activities. Many of Accra’s notable galleries will open their doors to the public who will be treated to a selection of curated art events.
The Roundtable discussions will allow influencers in the art industry to share their thoughts and experiences on some of the most pressing issues facing the creative sector today. Alongside the exhibitions and discussions, some of Accra’s creative spaces will offer special discounts to Accra Art Week ticket holders thereby creating additional avenues for discussion and the promotion of Ghanaian art and culture.
In a short amount of time, AAW has gathered the support of public and private stakeholders in the creative sector, proving the need for an industry level event which aligns the key stakeholders and partners of the sector.
Accra has been dubbed by many media outlets across the globe as a rising cultural arts hub. Collectors, curators and and art aficionados alike flock to Accra to get a serving of what Accra has to offer. This year, the FIRST edition of the ACCRA ART WEEK takes place between the 17th-22nd of December. The event will bring together art galleries, cultural institutions and artists in the city to showcase local and international artists who have links with the burgeoning arts hub that Accra is shaping up to be. According to the organisers, “The primary mission of AAW is to galvanise the creative sector locally and to reinforce Accra’s position as a leading arts destination in Africa.”
The program for the week long event includes exhibitions, studio visits, roundtable discussions, performances, and much more. One of the central questions the event hopes to address is ‘’How to increase art patronage and investment locally’’.
