Efia Serwah Barning (Ghanaian, b. 1998) is a surrealist whose visual practice responds to representations of black femininity throughout art history. Investigating how our bodies are often sites of temptation, discomfort or anxiety, her figurative & collage works explore the suppressed interior worlds of her subjects.

Wanting to present fluid depictions of black womanhood and femininity beyond traditional gazes, Efia Serwah engages in postures of the ordinary, explicit and sometimes vulnerable. Efia graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2020 where she studied International Law and Globalization with a focus on Women’s Rights and migrant issues. She is part of the Ghana based art agency, Artemartis.
