FAMOUS ARTIST Sinalo Ngcaba
Sinalo Ngcaba is a self-taught visual artist and creative director from East London but is now based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
From album covers and murals to fashion collaborations and global exhibitions, Sinalo creates with purpose bridging art, music, and community to remind us that beauty, resistance, and belonging can exist all at once.
She is known for her bold and vibrant Afro-surrealist style, employing mediums such as oil pastels, ink, paint, and digital tools to explore the intersections of Black joy, Black pop culture, womanhood, and human rights issues. Ngcaba’s work is characterized by dynamic characters, vivid colors, and humorous motifs, creating dreamlike worlds rooted in the Black South African experience. Her art documents the present and tells stories of her environment, merging Western and African cultural influences. Recurring themes include Black joy, womanhood, human rights, and reflections on the complexities of modern life. She has gained recognition through collaborations with global brands and organizations such as Nike, Spotify, Converse, and Apple Music, and her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in publications like WePresent and Hypebeast Africa, as well as at art fairs including the Cape Town International Art Fair. Additionally, her illustrations have appeared in books such as By Way of Illustration. Ngcaba draws inspiration from her grandmother, a writer and storyteller who nurtured her interest in African cultures, as well as from the energy of Johannesburg and the rich tradition of protest art in South Africa.
She has collaborated with major brands and artists, including Nike South Africa, Spotify Africa, Apple Music, Daily Paper, Converse, Yussef Dayes, and various African artists. Her work has been showcased globally in Paris, London, Los Angeles, Lagos, Accra, Miami, and at the Cape Town International Art Fair.
Sinalo’s creations have been featured in prominent publications such as WePresent, Hypebeast Africa, Mail & Guardian UK, Native Magazine, and The Sunday Times’ Wanted Business Magazine, solidifying her as a key voice in contemporary Black culture. Through her art, Sinalo continues to celebrate creativity, connection, and cultural vibrancy on a global scale.




Sinalo Ngcaba’s exhibitions showcase her vibrant and socially engaged practice, with her 2022 solo show KWENZEKILE at the Bubblegum Gallery at Constitution Hill highlighting her signature bold patterns and bright colors that reference Black pop culture and social issues. She has also participated in several recent group exhibitions, including Reshape 22: Future Art Histories, which featured her work following her win of the ANNA Audience Award; Labyrinth:
Revelations in March 2024 at the World Art Gallery, curated by the New Art Collective and Scape Events; and Far from Home in 2023 at the Bonne Espérance Gallery. Additionally, her work is included in the Melrose Gallery’s stable show, a celebration of contemporary African artists. These exhibitions collectively demonstrate Ngcaba’s growing international recognition and her commitment to exploring themes of Black joy, womanhood, and cultural identity through her dynamic, Afro-surrealist style.
