The Aesthetics of Afrobeat(s)
19TH DECEMBER 2025
Resisting Forgetfulness: The Aesthetics of Afrobeats is a dynamic celebration of the rhythm, rebellion, and resonance that define one of Africa’s greatest cultural exports. Presented as a ’’visual mixtape’’ of the contemporary African sound, the exhibition explores how artists across mediums — from painters and illustrators to photographers and digital creators — have shaped the visual identity of Afrobeats and Afrobeat, translating sound into image and movement into memory. Audiences will encounter bold, genre-defying works that echo the music’s pulse while insisting on remembrance, accountability, and pride.
Featuring collaborations with icons such as Fela Kuti, Burna Boy, Amaarae, Davido, The Cavemen, Gyakie, and Rema, the exhibition traces a lineage from Lemi Ghariokwu’s pioneering album art to the vibrant visuals driving Africa’s global cultural influence today. Expect a multisensory journey through protest and play, nostalgia and innovation — a testament to how art resists forgetting by making the present unforgettable.
